St Illtyds Church
Good for Walking
St Illtyds is a 12th century de-consecrated medieval church with a history pre-dating Christian Britain. It is the oldest building still standing in Blaenau Gwent, which is a place with more than its fair share of history. It's referenced in the 13th Century Black Book of Carmarthen (the Llyfr Du Caerfyrddin to Welsh speakers) but is known to be much older than that. The large circular enclosure surrounding may be more than 1000 years old.
These days St Illtyds Church stands out from the picturesque countryside as a reminder of times long past. The site is quite, green, and atmospheric- it doesn't take too much imagination to picture what the area would have looked like when the church was the biggest and most important building for miles around. It can also be the starting point for excellent walks.
