Newport and Caerleon
Newport is over 70% rural, and is surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of the Wye Valley and the Vale of Usk. The area has been sought after, and fought over for more than 2000 years, leaving a wonderful legacy of heritage, and an abundance of castles guard this corner of South East Wales.
Newport has Britain's most varied and fascinating Roman site at Caerleon, and one of it's most important historic houses, Tredegar House. Industrial heritage is well represented by the world-famous Transporter Bridge, and the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre, and wildlife and natural history fans will be delighted by the Wetlands Reserve, which attracts a terrific range of wetland birds, including the bearded tit and the rare avocet.
The city is a hub for sport and activity. As well as having over 30 golf courses in the area, it is home to one of the largest complexes of championship golf courses in Europe, the Celtic Manor Resort, which will host The Ryder Cup in 2010. Newport International Sports Village features a competition swimming pool and the Wales National Velodrome.
