Bedwellty House and Park

Good for New in 2011

Tredegar is a typical Valleys village with a rich and proud history. Bedwellty Park and House are just two of the many attractions in this area. The town is the birthplace of Nye Bevan and the place where the NHS was first conceived. If you have an interest in Welsh history, you'll find plenty to look at in and around Bedwellty Park.

Like so many villages in this part of Wales, Tredegar was founded on coal and iron. Bedwellty House is the old iron-master's dwelling, now set in a beautifully landscaped park where you can also see the largest single piece of coal in Wales.

It's not just a piece of black rock, but an incredible demonstration of mining skill. To have brought such a thing up from deep under the surface must have taken incredible care, understanding of engineering principles, and plain old hard work. To see it surrounded by the beautiful green landscape of Bedwellty Park is to see the contrast between the lushness of the Valleys and heavy industry of the coal years.

Of course, the park is also a great place to walk, play, or just relax and take in the scenery. Like many of South Wales' urban green spaces there are spectacular displays of daffodils all through the spring.
