National Waterfront Museum
Good for Museums & Art Galleries
Opened in the Summer of 2005, this 30.8 million landmark attraction in Swansea's maritime quarter tells Wales story of industry and innovation. This exciting visitor experience users up-to-date forms of interpretation and offers free admission to all.
Just a short distance from the Bristoal Channel and the mouth of the River Tawe, which gives Swansea its Welsh name, the National Waterfront Museum tells the story of the relationship between Wales and the sea. It covers not just the coal boom years (when Barry and Cardiff had two of the largest and busiest docks in the world) but also delves further back into the days before the industrial revolution.
Wales was not just an important source of coal and iron. Its maritime history is also about fishing and the movement of people from place to place. The story told at the Waterfront museum is the story of how Wales communicated with the wider world.
As the newest National Museum in the country, it has a wealth of cutting-edge interactive exhibits as well as more traditional displays. Both adults and children will find plenty to keep them busy.
