Tintern Abbey
Good for Heritage
The Wye Valley village of Tintern would be a beautiful place to visit even without the stunning ruins of the Cistercian abbey nestled right by the town. As it is, the impressive high Gothic arches are set against a background of lush broad-leaf woodland and the Wye itself. They make a truly spectacular sight.
Tintern Abbey was once very large indeed and the remains are still very substantial, so allow plenty of time to explore. The ruins are in the care of CADW and there are plenty of handy information boards, reconstructions of what the abbey and grounds might once have looked like, and more. The paths are generally well-kept and there is a fully stocked gift shop.
Anyone in need of refreshment need not look far- Tintern is also home to a whole host of traditional pubs and tea rooms. Good food is available just a stone's throw from the abbey.
If you feel like a walk after visiting Tintern Abbey (and partaking of a refreshing drink and a cake or two), there are several waymarked paths to choose from. Both the Wye Valley Walk and Offa's Dyke Path skirt very close to the town and the ruins. To get wonderful view from above, follow the signposts up to Devil's Pulpit.
Tintern is the perfect place to start exploring the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean. It has a something of all the best aspects of the area- the rich history, the beautiful, ancient woodland, and of course, the lovely Wye itself, winding its way past the abbey, through the village, and down towards the sea near Chepstow.
