National Roman Legion Museum
Good for Free Admission
The Roman Legion Museum is in Caerleon, on the site of a major Roman centre. Visitors can see the evidence left behind by the occupation in its original position and a wider collection of artifacts from elsewhere too. There are painstakingly restored floor mosaics, long-buried weapons of war, and countless objects that tell stories about what life was life before, during, and after the arrival of the Roman army.
The Roman Legion Museum puts on displays regularly and they are always worth a visit. They're great fun for kids- history comes alive as richly costumed staff re-enact events that took place in Caerleon 2000 years ago. It's always worth checking their website and marking down dates in your diary, because these events shouldn't be missed, especially for those with primary school-age children.
Older visitors can learn more about the Roman army in Britain, and in the South Wales area more specifically. They can find out all about their extensive network of roads, forts, and towns, and see how the Romans influenced the development of the modern towns and cities of today, from Caerleon to Cardiff and far beyond.
Here in South Wales we're lucky to have such an entertaining and informative Roman army museum. While the Romans occupied much of southern Britain, few places have historical attractions as good as this one!
