St Fagans National History Museum

Good for Food & Drink

The Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagans is one of the largest open-air museums on the globe and also one of the finest attractions in South Wales. The site is home to dozens of buildings, from complete farmhouses to beehives, rescued from all over Wales and transported to St Fagans stone by stone.

Some are hundreds of years old and some much younger- there is a whole village dating to the second world war, for example. Visitors to St Fagans museum can taste bread and cakes made in a traditional oven, look through the periodicals in a Workman's Institute, and see wool being woven into blankets and shawls. There is a lovingly restored 16th Century church, a reconstructed prehistoric settlement, and much more.

St Fagan's Museum of Welsh Life provides a safe haven for endangered historic buildings from all over Wales, and from all periods of history. It's a wonderful idea carried through with great care and drive- you only have to ask a question of one of the bi-lingual staff to find out there is a real passion for history here. There are all the usual written information panels, but each building has a helpful, friendly guide ready to tell a longer story and answer questions from visitors. Every country should have a place like this.

Inside the main museum building, there are displays and interactive exhibits of traditional Welsh clothing, farming equipment, and religous objects. The exploration of what it means to be Welsh is great fun for kids and will leave adults in a thoughtful mood. Be sure to visit the gift shop too- it's one of the best places to find books by Welsh authors (in two languages), Welsh crafts, and foods.

If you haven't been to St Fagans Museum of Welsh life it is an absolute must. Be sure to allow a whole day- and even then you'll probably want to come back soon!
