Magic Show

For some, the idea of magic suggests fantasy and illusion, while for others it signals a license to practice deception. This new exhibition considers how art and magic often share common ground, and how some contemporary artists adopt the perception-shifting tactics of the theatrical magician to influence the viewer and explore the power of suggestion.

Magic Show features work by 24 international artists, with new commissions and performances and an archive of historical posters, curious props and off-beat ephemera from the world of theatrical magic. The exhibition demonstrates how art and magic both flourish in the grey area between fact and fiction, and considers the potential of trickery and illusion to undermine logical thought.

The Los Angeles-based Center for Tactical Magic?s ?Ultimate Jacket? (designed for ?private investigators, magicians and ninjas?) has 50 pockets for optimum concealment and retrieval and will be worn by our gallery assistants. Susan Hiller?s ?Homage to Yves Klein? incorporates found photographs of people levitating, ranging from the low-tech sham to highly sophisticated ruse; while ?Failing to Levitate? documents Bruce Nauman?s similar attempts to get off the ground. Sinta Werner?s site-specific installations mimic architectural features in the gallery to distort space and trick your eye.

The archive section includes magician Paul Kieve?s collection of historical posters from theatrical magic?s ?Golden Era? (c1890-1930) that play up to the

Cardiff History Detective Walk

Not much remains of the ancient past of this most modern and vibrant of cities. Not much on the surface that is! However, a walk at a gentle pace through this most compact of city centres reveals countless clues of a city that was once a magnet for Romans, Vikings, Normans, and characters who lived, thrived and died in this city throughout the centuries.

Never a Royal Capital, and for most of its life not even a city, the simple market town and port of Cardiff was also a base for Kings in waiting, Kings in flight, and a King who should have been but died here in captivity.

This city centre walk, on an easy accessible route, helps you play history detective and see the modern cityscape in a completely new light.

This is a private tour ideally suited for small groups and individuals, at a time to suit you. It can also be tailored for families with children. Please enquire about special family rates. We meet and begin our walk on Cardiff Bridge, near Cardiff Castle. It lasts approximately 90 minutes.

Lightbox Commission - Holly Davey: I Told You So

Following on from Bedwyr Williams? much talked about Fly piece, Chapter is delighted to present a new commission by Cardiff-based artist Holly Davey which features on the lightbox at the front of Chapter.

Since January this year, Davey has been using the often hidden spaces of Chapter ? the stairwells, offices, roof ? for experimentation and to explore new ways of working.

Davey uses her body pictorially to mark out a series of frozen tableaux within an otherwise fluid choreography. These ?photographic performances? take place between the artist, the camera and the audience, and you are invited to see a trace of the performances as photographs. The camera becomes Davey?s audience, with the lens acting as a mirror. The final image is un-manipulated and remains the closest possible document of how Davey understood she would look as if viewing herself through the lens.

I Told You So features Chapter?s inaccessible rooftop which Davey used as a space in which to move freely, dance and interact with the architecture. Each photograph taken as part of her residency acted like an imprint on that space at that moment in time and they are all linked by a series of improvised responses. The final selected image provides a stunning and perhaps disturbing snapshot of Davey?s interaction with our old school building, and with the city above and beyond it.

Holly Davey studied at Goldsmiths College, London. Recent exhibitions and commissions include: Tell It To The Trees, Croft C

Ruth Jones: Vigil

Ruth Jones? recent video installations and public art projects have focused on the relationships between humans, animals and the land, and explored the magnetic pull that particular places have on people.

Vigil examines the presence that Strumble Head Lighthouse has on the landscape in North Pembrokeshire. The lighthouse was built in 1908, and its rotating beam can be seen for thirty miles in all directions. Every lighthouse has its own distinctive ?character?, recognised by a pattern and duration of flashes, in this case, one flash every two seconds four times, followed by seven seconds of darkness. Jones? project suggests that this rhythm has permeated the land for over a hundred years, seeping into the psyche of its inhabitants.

The installation also portrays the lighthouse as a threshold place, situated between land and sea, day and night and the human and animal kingdoms. Using Strumble?s regulated light pattern as a guide for editing both picture and sound, Jones? film invites a quiet contemplation of the internal and external rhythms that influence our daily experiences, rituals and memories.

Cardiff History Walks

Join Jim Cowan of Cardiff History and Hauntings for two free guided walks in Cardiff?s historic city centre to mark Open Doors 2010, part of European Heritage Days.

The walks are FREE but places are limited so must be booked in advance. Each walk will last about one hour.

CARDIFF'S HISTORIC CITY CENTRE walk takes us from the ancient to the modern as we explore the area between St John?s Church, one of the oldest buildings in the city centre, and Cardiff Library, one of the newest. Along the way, Jim will point out some long forgotten facts about the Hayes, talk about life in medieval Cardiff, and the people who lived, thrived and died here in centuries past, as well as revealing some fascinating facts about historic sites hidden among the 21st century developments, including the Old Library?s exquisite tiled corridor, not normally open to the public.

Walks start at 10am and 11.30am and last an hour. Meet at the Tourist Information Centre in The Old Library.

CARDIFF'S CIVIC CENTRE walk reveals the beauty of a relatively unexplored area, often overlooked by visitors and residents alike. This is a chance to appreciate the architecture and history of this elegant and tranquil part of the city centre, including some of the most significant buildings and institutions in Wales ? and some unusual residents of City Hall clock tower.

Walks start at 2pm and 3.30pm. Meet on the steps of the National Museum.

Shakespeare: The Man From Stratford

Shakespeare is the greatest writer the world has ever known. But we know nothing about him. Or do we? In a magical tour-de-force, Simon Callow, one of Britain?s greatest actors, tracks down the real William Shakespeare, bringing to life both the man and the unforgettable characters ? lovers, kings, soldiers and clowns ? who have since conquered the world?s stages.

Following the worldwide success of The Mystery of Charles Dickens (West End / Broadway) and hot on the heels of his sell-out hit Dr Marigold & Mr Chops, Callow joins forces with Jonathan Bate, pre-eminent Shakespeare biographer and editor of the Royal Shakespeare Company?s Shakespeare: The Complete Works, to fill the stage with Shakespeare?s real and imagined worlds. Fidelio (Beethoven)

Cast includes Dennis O?Neill as Florestan, Robert Hayward as Don Pizarro, Clive Bayley as Rocco, Elizabeth Donovan as Marzelline and Robin Tritschler as Jacquino

Leonore is utterly devoted to her husband Florestan. When he is unjustly arrested and detained as a political prisoner she sets out to rescue him. Posing as a man called Fidelio she works at the prison overseen by the abominable Don Pizarro. Time however is running out for Florestan - Pizarro decides to kill his most prized prisoner before the prison is inspected. Leonore?s belief in the power of love must carry her through to save her husband before it is too late.

Beethoven?s only opera is a rousing, triumphant affirmation of his belief that the most important human qualities, love, courage and kindness can exist in even the most inhuman of conditions. Fidelio is an extraordinary musical achievement consisting of both tender intimate scenes and epic, highly charged choruses. Giuseppe Frigeni?s powerful production of Fidelio promises to offer great performances of this great opera.
