The Wye Tour and its Artists

A major exhibition of over 70 watercolours on loan from the national collections in London as well as Wales, and from museums around the UK is being staged at Chepstow, the endpoint of the Wye Tour - Britain?s first ?package tour?. Guest curator Julian Mitchell* has selected his ?best and most interesting? watercolours of the Lower Wye Valley. Here are the sites viewed and visited by the first tourists who came down the river in canopied rowing boats from Ross-on-Wye to Chepstow on a two day trip in the late 18th and early 19th century. They followed in the wake of the Rev William Gilpin those book popularised the tour and the quest for ?picturesque? scenery - landscapes that could make, or be compared to, paintings. Many amateurs as well as professional artists came to capture the scenes. This exhibition features works by the masters from that great age of British watercolours, including Turner, Paul Sandby, Michael ?Angelo? Rooker, Thomas Hearne, Edward Dayes, John & Cornelius Varley, Samuel Palmer, David Cox, Joshua Cristall?

This exhibition has been made possible through a grant from the Cyfoeth Cymru Gyfan ? Sharing Treasures scheme which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and administered by CyMAL: Museums Archives and Libraries Wales.
The scheme enables local Welsh museums to build partnerships with Amgueddfa Cymru ? National Museum Wales and with their expertise, advice and support to upgrade facilities so that the museum can borrow and display objects

Peter Ross - Paintings of Newport

Peter was born in Llanfrechfa, South Wales in 1941. He grew up in Newport and studied at Newport Art College 1958-62 and then at Bristol art College 1962-63. For most of his working life he worked as an art teacher in secondary schools and before retiring in 2007, as an art technician. He now teaches life drawing to adults and exhibits his work in galleries in England and Wales. Since his time as an art student and throughout his teaching life Peter has continued to paint for himself. He has always chosen themes which appealed at the time, each lasting one to two years and usually resulting in an exhibition before starting on the next point of interest.

Peter's work has been mostly representational/narrative with one abstract phase immediately after leaving Art College. In recent years his interest has returned naturally his childhood and growing up in Newport, South Wales in the 50s and 60s. These paintings are based on family and archive photographs and also include memories and influences which form part of the development process.

Themes of previous exhibitions prior to this have included Heads/Faces, Conflict, Journeys, Dylan Thomas and Under Milk Wood and Welsh Valley Landscapes. Peter has had numerous one person and joint shows. His has also taken part in the Royal Academy Summer Show, The Welsh Arts Council, South Wales Group and Welsh Artist of the Year Show 2008.

His work can currently be seen at the Ardent Gallery, Brecon and the Albany Gallery, Cardi

Hay-on-Wye - in Welsh 'Y Gelli Gandryll' or just 'Y Gelli' is well known as 'the town of books'. It is home to the Hay Literature Festival which brings some 80,000 writers, publishers and literature fans from all across the world to this small market town in South East Powys in June each year.

During the rest of the year this pretty market town is the United Kingdom's mecca for books, boasting thirty major bookshops, mostly selling second hand publications. It was the world's first Book Town. It all stoarted in 1961 when Richard Booth opened his first book shop in Hay, which soon grew into Europe's largest second hand bookshop.

Foremost amongst the town's landmarks is the impressive ruined castle. Dating from the 13th century, like so many border castles in Wales it was significantly damaged by Glyndwr's rebellion in 1400. However, Hay Castle continued to be in use as a residence until the early 20th century.

Like Builth Wells, Hay actually has two castles. It is likely that Hay was first fortified by William Fitz Osbern during his penetration of south-east Wales during the summer of 1070. Over subsequent generations, the castles passed into the hands of many notorious Norman families including the Neufmarches, the Braoses and the Bohuns.

The remains of this fortress now lie beneath the current castle ruins and mansion. Without a doubt, this was the castle recorded as 'castello de haia' that surrendered to Miles Gloucester in 1121 along with Bernard Neudmarche's d

National Eisteddfod 2010

The Blaenau Gwent and Heads of the Valleys National Eisteddfod is held at The Works, Ebbw Vale from 31 July to 7 August 2010.

This is the first time that the Eisteddfod has been held in the area for over half a century, when Ebbw Vale was home to the festival in 1958.

The old steelworks on the outskirts of the town is home to the Eisteddfod this time, a site which plays an integral role in both local and national industrial history. The site is accessible by car, foot and by public transport, and less than a 45 minute journey from the centre of Cardiff

The catchment area includes Blaenau Gwent and the counties which form the Heads of the Valleys ? Torfaen, Caerphilly, Rhondda Cynon Taff and Merthyr Tydfil, and activities will take place locally between now and the Eisteddfod itself.
