Roman Rhythm
As part the Amgueddfa Cymru ? National Museum Wales Music 09 theme, you can view replica instruments at the National Roman Legion Museum and hear them being played in a film accompanying the exhibition.
Though it is not known how music would have sounded in Roman times, we know through mosaics, frescoes and images on tombstones what types of instruments were used and when they might have been played.
Roman instruments include:
Lyre
A string instrument. The strings were made out of gut and played with a plectrum, similar to a guitar. The lyre was used as an accompaniment to songs and poetry.
Cornu
A wind instrument. Cornu means ?horn? and originally they were made from horn, later brass. Used by the Roman Army to signal important orders on the battlefield.
Tympanum
A percussion instrument. Animal skin was stretched over a wooden frame to make a drum that was struck with a wooden beater.

Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake
When it premiered at Sadler?s Wells in 1995, Matthew Bourne?s triumphant modern re-interpretation of Swan Lake turned tradition upside down, taking the dance world by storm. Now firmly crowned as a modern day classic, this iconic production is perhaps best-known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble.
Matthew Bourne blends dance, humour and spectacle with extravagant, award-winning designs by Lez Brotherston, to create a provocative and powerful Swan Lake for our times.
Collecting over 30 international theatre awards including three Tonys, Swan Lake has been acclaimed as a landmark achievement on the international stage. It has become the longest running ballet in the West End and on Broadway and enjoyed four hugely successful tours in the UK and thrilled audiences all over the world.

A Good Night Out in the Valleys
National Theatre of Wales
Written by Alan Harris, directed by John E McGrath, designed by Angela Davies
What's the most extraordinary Valleys story of all? After listening to hundreds, we transform the best into a beautiful, outrageous night of theatre.
'If these walls could speak you'd have a volume as long as this table'
'I've been caretaker here since around 1985, I've seen a lot over the years. There's a history and nostalgia attached to this place. Memorable things have gone on in this hall. Young people from all over the world have been here. I have it all in the visitor's book. People have come from everywhere: Sardinia, Italy, Lithuania, Holland - all over the place for international Youth peace week - Israel, Palestine, everywhere, and Wales, of course. We've had Syd Lawrence on this stage and his orchestra and I believe Maria Callas sang here. Apparently they had their own opera company. Paul Robeson sat there, not in these seats, but visited here and got involved with the miners. There's been many a good night out here'
Bill Thomas, Caretaker, Bedwas Workman's Hall

FFIN Dance returns with The Sweetheart Tour 2010
SWEETHEART ROLAND was made by FFIN DANCE Artistic Director, Sue Lewis, in collaboration with designer Steve Denton. The work is based on the gruesome story of Sweetheart Roland by the Brothers Grimm. With music by John Dowland, Massive Attack and Radiohead, and sumptuous costumes by Steve Denton, the work unfolds episodes of physical and athletic dancing. Ffin will also be performing GOOGLE WOMEN, which was created by performance architect Sheron Wray in June 2009; the piece is a duet for 2 women and it examines the place of women in the past, the present and the future. Sheron Wray is an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Irvine, a former dancer with London Contemporary Dance Theatre and Rambert Dance Company. Photography courtesy of Maria Farrelly

Julian Clary
But has the bottom fallen out of the homosexual meat market? I must tour my kingdom to find out.
In these difficult times I feel I should go and comfort my people in the provinces. My friend Damien tells me the men are very hard up in Sheffield. I only hope I'm not too late.
I'm 50. The shame of it. This will be an intimate evening - a celebration, no less, of my twenty-five years in the camp spotlight: how I got there and why I refuse to leave. Come and see me before they put me in a home for tired old knackers.

The Seven Fingers Traces
We really want you to see this show. Traces is not circus like you have seen it before.
It is a high energy, dazzling display of urban acrobatics that combines traditional circus skills with basketball, skateboarding, a mix of street and contemporary dance, traditional theatre, humour and amazing audio visual effects. Set to a soundtrack that includes hip-hop, rock and roll, blues and classical music, this infectious, funky pioneering new brand of circus is a thrill-a-minute and will leave you begging for more.
The fi ve ultra-talented performers reveal snippets of their own personal stories throughout the show, drawing the audience in until the heart-stopping climax, which will leave you on the edge of your seats, willing them to pull off the seemingly impossible.
Since taking the Edinburgh Festival by storm with its fi rst UK performance in 2007, this award-winning show has gone on to achieve sell out seasons in London?s West End, New York, Paris and Montreal.

Set to a glorious orchestral suite of music by Alun Hoddinott and played by BBCNOW, it recently toured the UK and China to great acclaim. The second production, Shut Up! is a new riveting piece of dance-theatre, depicting the tearing apart of broken love relationships, set to the music of the X factor generation.

Carol Ann Duffy and Gillian Clarke
Carol Ann Duffy and Gillian Clarke - A Meeting of Two Laureates will take place at 12.30 pm on Saturday 20 March at the prestigious St David's Hotel in Cardiff Bay. This event will be a unique opportunity to hear two of the leading voices in contemporary British poetry. The poets will read a selection of their work, as well as discuss the parallels - and differences - of their two respective roles as National Poet of Wales and Poet Laureate of Britain.
Carol Ann Duffy was created Poet Laureate in 2009, the first woman and the first Scots person to hold the office. She is one of the most popular poets in Britain, and her performances at festivals and events are sell-outs. The Guardian newspaper says: "In the world of British poetry, Carol Ann Duffy is a superstar".
Gillian Clarke has been National Poet of Wales since 2008. Her poetry is studied at almost every school in Britain, and she has performed her work in front of hundreds of thousands of young people at the popular GCSE Poetry Live! tours.

The Big Chris Barber Band
Chris Barber is a legend. Celebrating 60 years as the great British trombonist and bandleader with over 10,000 concerts, Chris Barber has been a prodigy of the jazz world since the early 1950s and ?can?t stop now?!
From his roots in New Orleans to the early music of Duke Ellington and Miles Davis, Chris Barber leads his fabulous 11-piece band in a concert of superb traditional jazz and blues together with swing and ragtime in classics like Bourbon Street Parade, Black and Tan Fantasy, Big Noise from Winnetka - and probably When the Saints!
With Lonnie Donegan, Chris Barber set the scene for skiffle in the 50s. He collaborated with the world?s finest musicians and introduced legendary American blues players like Muddy Waters to Britain. A generation of musicians including Mark Knopfler, Eric Burdon, The Stones, Eric Clapton and Van Morrison have all been influenced by him.
This concert promises a superb, highly memorable evening in the magnificent Bradenstoke Hall in St Donats Castle.
