Llancaiach Fawr Manor

Good for Castles

Llancaiach Fawr Manor has the advantage of a setting that shows off the best of the Caerphilly countryside. It has rolling hills, lush green grass, peace and quiet, and clear streams. Sometimes lucky visitors even catch sight of red kites cruising far above. The house itself lets people see how the locals lived in the 17th Century, although there are signs of habitation dating back far further. It was built during the turbulent and dangerous Tudor era and is partially fortified.

Llancaiach Fawr isn't a huge castle or a royal palace. It was built by a local lord in a place with local significance and has a lot to say about what life was like in Tudor times, not in the big towns and settlements but out in the countryside. It the time the foundations stones were laid down Wales was a very different place. Agriculture was still central to the Valleys and the industrial revolution was still a long way in the future.

If that sounds a little academic, there is another side to the manor. Visitors can see a wealth of of evidence of old superstitions, bloody conflicts, and everyday family life here. Llancaiach is also said to be one of the ten most haunted buildings in the UK- a fact that is bound to excite the young and the young at heart!

Thoughout the year, Llancaiach Fawr Manor maintains a full program of events. They range from spine-tingling ghost tours to craft workshops, harvest festivals, and antiques fairs. There are also special treats during the half-term breaks and across the Christmas period.
