Caerphilly Castle

Good for Castles

Caerphilly Castle is a massive medieval fortress set in what is now a beautiful lake where swans, geese, and other waterbirds abound. Although the castle fell into disrepair centuries ago, it was heavily restored by John Crichton Stuart, Marquess of Bute and the driving force of many of South Wales' finest buildings and bridges. These days CADW takes care of the castle. Their efforts have brought a rare wooden gallery and the spectacular Great Hall back to life.

The huge cracked tower is a South Wales icon, and leans at a steeper angle than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Caerphilly locals are proud of it and their magnificent castle, with good reason.

Regular medieval events are held at Caerphilly Castle. The awe-inspiring siege engines (painstakingly reconstructed using the methods of experimental archaeology) are fired across the lake on special occasions. See the website for more information and the upcoming events.
